Not surprisingly, n|Frame receives an increase in inquires about our disaster recovery and business continuity services directly after the media covers a natural disaster – whether locally in Indianapolis or afar. For instance, after the earthquake in Haiti and the BP oil spill in the Gulf we had an influx of business and technology leaders call us about our off-site data back-up, replication and recovery services as well as our alternative worksite program which is a 15,000 square foot, full-furnished back-up workspace recovery facility.
Interestingly, while international catastrophes seem to be the prompt for many of our clients to start thinking about business continuity and disaster recovery planning, it’s always the little things that bring down a business and force executives to make decisions. For instance, power outages caused by electrical storms or roof damage caused by severe thunder storms can shut down a company. These are the emergencies you can’t anticipate, but you can plan for with a disaster recovery and business continuity protocol.
Make disaster recovery and business continuity part of your company’s annual business planning and budgeting process. If you wait until you really need it, it may be too late.
I recently came across an article in Technology News that details some key points to keep in mind as your company puts in place or updates its disaster recovery plan. These statistics from the University of Texas are a compelling reason to develop a plan and find good partners sooner versus later:
- Fewer than 6 percent of companies that suffer a catastrophic data loss survive;
- 43 percent of companies that suffer a catastrophic data loss never reopen; and
- 51 percent of companies that suffer a catastrophic data loss close within two years.
