A recent Information Week survey of over 500 technology business professionals showed that more than half of respondents are either currently using private cloud computing environments to power their networks (28%) or are planning to do so in the future (30%).
The study identified the top drivers and the barriers for going virtual. It’s a pretty mixed bag which isn’t too surprising since most people are still learning about and getting comfortable with cloud computing and virtualization.
The number one reason executives are choosing private cloud computing is to cut IT costs. A close second is the ability to quickly meet user demand. This makes sense when you think about the inherent flexibility and scalability of cloud computing. At n|Frame we offer a pay-for-what-you-actually-use computing model. This allows our clients to prepare for growth without funding it in advance because our virtual infrastructures can scale up instantaneously. This means you can add computing capacity, bandwidth and data storage on demand.
The survey didn’t find any one monolithic barrier to cloud computing. Of course cost is always a concern, but the most significant objection is “no business need.” Information Week surmises that most IT-business professionals are experimenting with private cloud computing technology and figuring out whether and how to apply it. I completely agree with that perspective. Cloud computing, private or public, is certainly not the right technology approach for every organization.
