n|Frame’s Indianapolis data center is frequently used as a testing site for software, hardware and IT processes. NetworkWorld magazine recently published the results of a test of Hughes’ Net VSAT service.

Due to our highly controlled IT networking environment, n|Frame’s Indianapolis data center continues to be a choice testing site for new technology software, hardware and processes. Recently ExtremeLabs in Bloomington, Indiana ran a test of Hughes’ Net VSAT service from our facility. The results were published by Network World.

Not sure what a VSAT is? It stands for “Very Small Aperture Terminal” satellite services. It has been a staple technology solution among retail businesses nearly 20 years, but now the technology is common among many other vertical markets. Typically, VSATs are attractive to organizations that needed to reach hundreds or thousands of locations with low-bandwidth data connectivity.

Widespread availability of wired broadband services has led to small growth in satellite connectivity. However, satellite links can provide faster Internet connectivity in some areas of the country where access is not available or does not have faster broadband technology in place. Satellite service can also be an effective backup as a part of a companies’ business continuity plan in the event of natural disaster where wired broadband is simply wiped out.
According to Network World magazine, Extreme Labs set up two scenario networks, in n|Frame’s northside Indianapolis data center, illustrating a small remote office and the Hughes VSAT service as a failover circuit. The first scenario created faster speeds than a modem and similar speeds to an asymmetrical DSL connection. The company couldn’t be surfing YouTube for the next viral video, but business could be done. The second scenario created an environment where the company would have very slow speeds once the transition is made compared to normal operations. Proposed modifications could be made to allow faster connection to email, calendars, and contacts. To see the results and how the Hughes VSAT service was tested read the Network World article.

n|Frame will continue to support the development of new technologies and IT processes. We pride ourselves on working with companies to assist them with their technology challenges, but also providing solutions to “big picture” business and operational issues as well.
